Marty Friedman is sure proof that there’s life after Megadeth. In the almost-20 years since he parted ways with the trash metal giant, Friedman has enjoyed a successful and prolific solo career, with 2017’s Wall of Sound considered by many to be his finest work.

But as Friedman has revealed in a recent talk with Andrew McKaysmith on his podcast Scars And Guitars, coming out with a great album has its own downsides: “I’m still completely in awe of Wall Of Sound, as much as you can be in awe of your own work,” said the guitar virtuoso.

“A lot of that awe comes from performances by other people that I got on there. I’m just very, very proud of that record, and I know that when I go back into the studio to do the next record, I’m going to have to beat that. Frankly, I’m not looking forward to the challenge.”

On performing his solo material live, Friedman had this to say: “My stuff is instrumental, so I don’t have the lyrics to let people think about, so I have to be the singer out there on guitar. That’s the biggest challenge or the biggest goal that I have. The biggest compliment that I get that I enjoy the most when people see us live is that they say, ‘I didn’t miss a singer at all. I never knew an instrumental show could be this wild or this fun or this crazy.’ That’s pretty much the goal.”

So if you’re lucky enough to catch Marty Friedman live, you know what to tell him after the show!
