Back in 2018, Fleetwood Mac fired their guitarist Lindsey Buckingham in what turned out to be a highly publicized breakup. It seems like two years wasn’t enough for the two sides to mend their relationship, as the group’s founder and drummer Mick Fleetwood ruled out the possibility of a reunion with Buckingham.

During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Fleetwood was asked whether he can imagine a scenario in which Buckingham is back in the band. The answer was a definitive no, as the British musician insists the group is doing well with his replacements in Neil Finn (former Crowded House) and Mike Campbell (former Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers).

“No. Fleetwood Mac is a strange creature,” responded Fleetwood. “We’re very, very committed to Neil and Mike, and that passed away a time ago when Lindsey left. And it’s not a point of conversation, so I have to say no.”

“The situation was no secret. We were not happy. It was not working, and we parted company. And that is all of it,” he added.

In the aftermath of Lindsey Buckingham’s firing, several opposing reports surfaced about the true reason for his departure. According to one version, Buckingham refused to go on a tour and wanted to take prolonged time off in order to work on his solo projects. On the other hand, Buckingham claims that the Fleetwood Mac’s vocalist Stevie Nicks is the one who got him fired, as she had personal issues with him.

Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham is no longer a part of Fleetwood Mac. According to the Rolling Stone magazine, Buckingham was fired after a disagreement with the rest of the band over Fleetwood Mac’s upcoming tour. The band will bring in Neil Finn of Crowded House and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell as his replacements.

“We are thrilled to welcome the musical talents of the caliber of Mike Campbell and Neil Finn into the Mac family,” said the band members in a joint statement. “With Mike and Neil, we’ll be performing all the hits that the fans love, plus we’ll be surprising our audiences with some tracks from our historic catalog of songs. Fleetwood Mac has always been a creative evolution. We look forward to honoring that spirit on this upcoming tour.”

“Fleetwood Mac has always been about an amazing collection of songs that are performed with a unique blend of talents” added drummer Mick Fleetwood. “We jammed with Mike and Neil and the chemistry really worked and let the band realize that this is the right combination to go forward with in Fleetwood Mac style. We know we have something new, yet it’s got the unmistakable Mac sound.”

Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975 and immediately became one of the band’s creative driving forces. After contributing to the 1975 self-titled album Fleetwood Mac, he provided the majority of the songs and vocals for 1977’s Rumors, which ended up becoming Fleetwood Mac’s most successful album. In 1987, Buckingham decided to leave the band citing his strained relationship with some members of the band and unwillingness to tour as reasons. After several successful solo projects, he decided to rejoin the band in 1996.
