The Smith’s Johnny Marr is getting ready to get back into the studio straight after touring. He just released a brand new single “Armatopia” and a new album will be on the way later this year.

Speaking with NME, Marr revealed that his inspiration these days does not come from what is going on around him but comes from what is going on inside his own head.

“My instinct tells me that what is inside my own mind is probably going to be more rewarding than trying to work out what’s inside the mind of people whose faces I’m saying on the telly and in the media,” he explained. “There are times when I find the public life and the people in it are intriguing, but I don’t want to make a cynical record. When I look outwards to the impact of public figures, it’s hard for your cynicism to not kick in. I want to find some idealism in life and I’m probably better off finding that inside my own heart and mind.”

Musically, on the other hand, Marr is finding himself more and more inspired by technology. That said, he insists that the device music is delivered on has no impact on the music itself.

“There are a load of different ways I can go. I like living in the modern world. I like the sounds, the technology, the way people relate to music. I get asked a lot about the way music has changed and perhaps devalued. It’s becoming more and more obvious to me that music can’t be devalued because of the way that people relate to songs.

“How a person relates to a particular song, be it an emotional song or a banger or something aggressive or romantic, it makes no difference about the device it’s delivered on.”

Johnny Marr is on tour now. You can catch him next Friday the 7th at Release Athens Festival in Greece.

The audience at Ohana Music Festival in Dana Point, California got a pleasant surprise during the live performance of former The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. During his set, Marr decided to invite Pearl Jam’s frontman Eddie Vedder on stage to provide vocals for The Smiths’ signature song “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.”

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank a good friend of mine, someone who I’ve admired and who’s been to me and who’s an inspiration,” – said Marr while introducing Vedder.

You can check out the video in which Marr and Vedder cover the legendary British indie band below.

“There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” was featured on The Smiths’ third studio album The Queen Is Dead, which was released in 1986. Johnny Marr wrote the music for the track, while the band’s vocalist Morrissey provided the lyrics.

Eddie Vedder’s appearance at the Ohana Music Festival wasn’t a pure coincidence since he was the headliner for day three of the event. During his set, Vedder played mostly covers, including one of Pearl Jam’s songs “Better Man,” for which he recruited American singer/songwriter Liz Phair. You can check out the video from the gig below.

The Smiths fans will most likely never give up on hopes that this legendary British band might reunite at some point, but everything is working against that. Although there are numerous other reasons, just the fact that guitarist Johnny Marr and vocalist Morrissey have been on bad terms for almost 30 years makes the reunion borderline impossible.

Marr recently talked with The Independent, and once again confirmed that he and Morrissey haven’t worked out their issues, which led to The Smiths’ split.

Johnny Marr was asked if his public comments on The Smiths’ breakup and Morrissey were because of the fact that he and Morrissey were still mates.

“I wouldn’t say that no. No, no, no. Haha, no we’re not mates,” responded Marr. “We’re just very different. But we always were very different people. But everyone knows that! Everyone knows everything there is to know.”

Johnny Marr and Morrissey formed The Smiths in 1982, later being joined by bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce. They released their first self-titled album in 1984, with three more following until 1987.

They established themselves as critics’ favorites while developing a cult following among music fans. Despite the band’s continued success and growing popularity, Marr decided to take a break from the band in June 1987, citing exhaustion as the main reason. This wasn’t received positively by the rest of the band, who recruited Ivor Perry to fill in for Marr. Although the band recorded some demo tapes with Perry, the experiment didn’t work out for the best. The Smiths officially disbanded in September 1987.

According to later statements, both Marr and Morrissey had their own reasons for why their relationship took the wrong turn. Morrissey wasn’t pleased with the fact that Marr worked with other musicians, while Marr hated Morrissey’s “musical inflexibility” and his obsession with covering 1960s pop artists.

After The Smiths split, both Johnny Marr and Morrissey went on to have successful solo careers.
