Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams recently treated her fans with a surprising cover of Radiohead’s 1995 track “Fake Plastic Trees.” Williams recorded her version in a home surrounding, being followed just by an acoustic guitar.

According to Williams, who posted the cover on social media, she was initially reluctant to take on the alternative rock legends despite her fans asking her to play Radiohead. Luckily, she ended up changing her mind.

“Seemed sacrilegious at first until I realized that the band themselves have never once regarded what they do as precious or never-to-be-toyed with,” Williams wrote on Instagram. “They are never beholden to any one version of their expression, and public affections don’t seem to sway them.”

Since the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, Hayley Williams has kept herself busy by covering songs from all kinds of different genres. Besides “Fake Plastic Trees,” Williams also did renditions of Björk’s “Unison,” Tegan and Sara’s “Call It Off,” and SZA’s “Drew Barrymore.”

Williams released her highly anticipated solo debut album Petals for Armor earlier this year, which was met with positive reviews. She planned to go on tour late in 2020 to promote the record, but recently announced that the planned shows have been canceled.

Hayley Williams has released the solo album she thought she would never make and it tells a different story to her Paramore records.

“Rage is a quiet thing”, Hayley utters in the opening track “Simmer”. The track snarls and then whispers, powering through a range of emotions with her vocals alone. Musically, “Simmer” takes inspiration from a range of influences. It nods to Christine & The Queens or even Bjork’s debut album. At the heart of the music, however, is Hayley’s own voice — raw and distinct from the band she has been performing with for almost half her life.

“Creepin'” is rooted in emo but moves more towards the fresher sound of Grimes and Poppy. Hayley’s roots are so established that she doesn’t need to honor them. She has earned the right to play with genre and trade distorted guitars for the double bass if it suits her mood.

The second part of the album takes on a more personal tone. Hayley apologizes for the delay on the track “Dead Horse”, claiming she has been “in a depression.” The lyrics are profound but the track plays as a light-hearted pop-rock single. And it really works.

“Why We Ever” concludes the second part of the album. It moves away from pop-rock and instead has R&B influences. It certainly sounds like Hayley has taken inspiration from Solange here. Williams layers her raspy vocals, creating a tune with cool underground tones. The muddy piano adds another layer of instrumentation to the record.

The third and final part of the album opens with the track “Pure Love”. This is a track that would not sound out of place on Paramore’s After Laughter. It has synth-pop tropes and nods back to the 80s. It shifts away from the R&B feel of “Taken” and “Sugar On The Rim”. Funnily enough, it is in these songs that Hayley sounds most comfortable.

Overall, Petals For Armor is a well-rounded album that shows off Hayley’s potential as an artist. For Paramore fans, she will always be the queen of emo but if Hayley continues in this new direction, she will likely gain a host of her own distinct fans too.

Paramore’s frontwoman Hayley Williams is currently busy promoting her upcoming debut solo album Petals for Armor, trying to show that she can do great stuff on her own. But, as it turns out, while Williams wants to get recognized for her solo work, she perhaps isn’t so interested in being famous.

Williams recently chatted with Zane Lowe of Beats 1 and shared that she once turned down an opportunity to collaborate with rapper Lil Uzi Vert. According to the singer/songwriter, the reason was that she didn’t want to become too famous.

“I remember Uzi asking me to do some stuff with him and I know that fans are going to be so pissed at me for saying this, but I literally wrote him back on Instagram and I was like, “Buddy, I love you so much, but I don’t want to be that famous,” Williams explained.

According to Williams, the offer came around the time when Paramore decided to go on a break. At the time, she wanted to get out of the spotlight for a while, so Uzi Vert’s proposal came at the wrong time.

“Because that is…He’s like a big artist, man. My stepbrother is obsessed with them. He was pissed when I told him the story,” she added.

Hayley Williams will release Petals for Armor on May 8th, with the album being preceded by two EPs. Williams already released three singles from the record, with “Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris” being the most recent one.

Hayley Williams gave us another taste of her upcoming and highly anticipated debut solo album Petals for Armor. After previously sharing lead single “Simmer,” Paramore’s frontwoman now presented another new track titled “Leave It Alone.”

Williams wrote “Leave It Alone” with Paramore’s touring bassist Joey Howard while the production was handled by the band’s guitarist Taylor York. The song was accompanied by a music video that was directed by Warren Fu. Check it out below.

Hayley Williams’ debut album is set for release on 8th May 2020 via Atlantic Records. According to Williams, the album was written in 2019 during the time when Paramore was on hiatus. She described the process as a “scary, empowering experience” in one of the interviews. Following the release of Petals for Armor, Williams intends to tour in support of the record.

Despite embarking on a solo music career, Williams insists that this doesn’t mean the end of Paramore and that the band is on hiatus. The group released their most recent album, titled After Laughter, back in 2017. The LP was well received by the critics and peaked at No.6 on US Billboard 200.

Hayley Williams has released the solo album she thought she would never make and it tells a different story to her Paramore records.

“Rage is a quiet thing”, Hayley utters in the opening track “Simmer”. The track snarls and then whispers, powering through a range of emotions with her vocals alone.
