]]> Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams recently treated her fans with a surprising cover of Radiohead’s 1995 track “Fake Plastic Trees.” Williams recorded her version in a home surrounding, being followed just by an acoustic guitar.

According to Williams, who posted the cover on social media, she was initially reluctant to take on the alternative rock legends despite her fans asking her to play Radiohead. Luckily, she ended up changing her mind.

“Seemed sacrilegious at first until I realized that the band themselves have never once regarded what they do as precious or never-to-be-toyed with,” Williams wrote on Instagram. “They are never beholden to any one version of their expression, and public affections don’t seem to sway them.”

for a while, anyway. the top requested song throughout my brief career in self-serenadism has been a @radiohead song. seemed sacrilegious at first until i realized that the band themselves have never once regarded what they do as precious or never-to-be-toyed with. they are never beholden to any one version of their expression and public affections don’t seem to sway them. so many times people thought they were at their best only for them to bloom more beautifully into something unexpected and unequivocally better. for a time i pretended to be over Radiohead (iiii knowwww) but good good things always find you and welcome you back. so, in admiration of one of the best bands of all time – and in humility to everyone who did *not* ask for this – here’s a self-serenade of “Fake Plastic Trees”. enjoy it if you can.

Since the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, Hayley Williams has kept herself busy by covering songs from all kinds of different genres. Besides “Fake Plastic Trees,” Williams also did renditions of Björk’s “Unison,” Tegan and Sara’s “Call It Off,” and SZA’s “Drew Barrymore.”

Williams released her highly anticipated solo debut album Petals for Armor earlier this year, which was met with positive reviews. She planned to go on tour late in 2020 to promote the record, but recently announced that the planned shows have been canceled.
