]]>The news of The Weeknd’s latest record doesn’t come as a shocker since Guinness World Records was looking at Spotify numbers to determine who’s the world’s most popular artist. The Weeknd came on top shortly after becoming the first artist to reach 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify after hitting 111.4 million monthly listeners.
None of his competitors came even close, with Miley Cyrus taking the second spot with 82.4 million monthly listeners. The list of contenders also included Shakira (81.6 million), Ariana Grande (80.6 million), Taylor Swift (80.2 million), Rihanna (78.5 million), and Ed Sheeran (77.5 million).
The Weeknd’s Spotify numbers soared to new heights following the release of the “Die For You” remix featuring Ariana Grande. After this song from his 2016 album Starboy experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks to TikTok, Grande hopped on a remix, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart following its release.
This isn’t the first time The Weeknd was honored by Guinness World Records. Back in 2016, he collected two certifications, for the most streamed album on Spotify in 2015 and for most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 by a solo male artist.
