According to Way’s Instagram post, he was going through unreleased material while in isolation and figured he could give fans something to listen to. Some of the tracks were intended to be released as singles, but that won’t be the case now.
“I’m calling all of this stuff Distraction Or Despair since that seems to be the two things I keep shifting between. Probably a lot of other people too,” he wrote on social media. “But I think only some of the tracks are tied to an “album” of that name. I’m just winging it, keeping it casual. May add some notes to the tracks.”
After a six-year-long hiatus, Gerard Way decided to reunite with his My Chemical Romance bandmates in October 2019 for a one-off show in Los Angeles. Following a positive reaction from the fans, the group decided to embark on a worldwide tour in 2020. The tour was scheduled to kick off in Australia on March 20th, but the shows were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

]]>Although the comics may seem like a sidestep away from Way’s music career, the My Chemical Romance star has revealed that music, in fact, played a very important part in his creation of the comics.
Speaking with NME, he explained that the music he was obsessively listening to during the writing process had shaped the “feel” of the comics.
“When I wrote the first book, I was listening obsessively to Teenage Fanclub, the Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins, and I think the influence of those records – and the feel of those records – are in the comics,” he explained. “With the TV show, I didn’t have a lot of input – Steve came to it with a pretty clear idea of the music he wanted to use. When he writes scripts, he includes songs as he goes, a bit like [Guardians Of The Galaxy director] James Gunn does.”
He continued: “Moving forward though, if we get a second season, I’ve said to Steve that I’d really like to get involved more there. I’m of the mind that when you have a big captive audience, you can introduce them to more left-of-center stuff. I’d always pick a song by a band like Wire or Gang Of Four over the sort of stuff Steve does, although I think he’s incredible at using songs you’ve heard before in really interesting ways.”
The Umbrella Academy has been renewed for a second season but no release date has yet been confirmed.

The series is not your typical superhero story and deals with pressing family issues, particularly when it comes to dysfunction.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gerard Way reveals that his experience being in My Chemical Romance helped shape the comics and its characters.
“Being in a band is like being in a dysfunctional family and all these personalities are really distinct and really big, not just the people in your band, but the people you meet on the road or the crew that you work with and all this stuff,” he explained.
“A band especially is a dysfunctional family, so there’s little bits of me in all the characters,
He added: “We were in a big pressure cooker of fame and notoriety and the characters experience that in the comic and the show.”

“When things start to succeed and go really well… That’s when a lot of people start to have an opinion and that’s when you run into struggle. It wasn’t fun to make stuff anymore. I think breaking up the band broke us out of that machine,” said Way.
After parting ways in 2013, My Chemical Romance released greatest hits album May Death Never Stop You and celebrated the tenth anniversary of The Black Parade by dropping a reissue with several unreleased demos and live tracks.
