Frank Turner recently announced his seventh studio album Be More Kind and presented a new single 1933.”

“1993” probably won’t go down in history as the Turner’s best song, but it is a welcoming surprise. The song starts with an upbeat drum part and guitar ring, which feels like you walked into some punk anthem.

“Stop asking musicians what they think/ He said softly as he poured himself a second drink,” sings Turner making us think he went back to his post-hardcore roots.

Towards the chorus, the song evens out and Turner still shows us that he embraces his folk influences on this song as well. It feels like he figured in the last moment that he shouldn’t be so all in on the microphone.

You could easily describe “1933” as an anthem with strong political statements, but that wouldn’t do it well. So many songs were described as anthems that the term became worn out. “1933” is simply an exciting song which kicks on all cylinders with smart lyrics (You can’t fix the world if all you have is a hammer), uplifting drums and occasional roaring guitars. Turner isn’t afraid to let his vocals lose and scream from the bottom of his lungs when he needs to.

We just hope that there will be more of these moments on Be More Kind. Until then, “1933” is definitely a song to add to your playlist.
