While Coldplay decided to take a break from touring, this doesn’t mean the band has stopped performing altogether. The British group recently took part in NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, where they performed a number of songs from their most recent album Everyday Life as well as few other intriguing tracks.

Coldplay, who were joined by For Love Choir, opened the set with “Cry Cry Cry,” before turning back the clock and performing2008’s hit single “Viva La Vida.” Then, following another new song, “Broken,” Chris Martin and co. decided to treat the radio’s listeners with a cover of Prince’s “1999.” The set wrapped up with “Champion of the World.”

Check out Coldplay’s Tiny Desk Concert in full below or directly on NPR.

Coldplay released Everyday Life in November 2019, putting an end to a four-year studio break. The album was well-received and topped the charts in more than 10 countries, including the UK. It wasn’t as successful in the U.S., however, peaking at No.7 on US Billboard 200.

Although the group was expected to follow up the release with a world tour, they opted not to go on the road “until they had addressed concerns regarding travel and the environmental impact of the shows.”

Coldplay is back after a four-year hiatus from releasing new music. “Everyday Life” is accessible, refined, and full of great tunes.

The album commences with “Sunrise.” The instrumental track comprises of sad violins, teasing a depressing yet promising start to the new record. Subsequent track “Church” is a little more upbeat. Chris Martin’s voice is melancholy but you can hear the band’s sincere effort to move away from the depressing Radiohead vibes. At risk of losing their signature sound, “Church” toys with signature Brit-pop chord progressions, creating a tune that is slightly reminiscent of The Verve.

“Trouble In Town” is an even bigger step away from iconic tracks like “Fix You” and “Yellow”. The pacing rhythm beneath the track is almost something you can move your hips to. It’s not a soft rock anthem, and it’s a little experimental. Martin’s vocals are interrupted by jarring radio announcements. The interlude is followed by a musical uproar and the return of the pacing bass. It sounds like Coldplay have been listening to Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

“BrokEn”, on the other hand, makes use of gospel choirs, which may possibly be the music trend of the year. The track is charming and soothing, but it’s a little unclear what direction the new album is taking.

From “Daddy” onwards, however, Coldplay reassures fans that they still know who they are. The remainder of the record revisits acoustic guitar and piano tracks. The tunes are comforting but meet festival-worthy crescendos. The slow and melancholy opener is substituted in part two by quick, folky guitar. The lyrics are somber, but the tune is catchy. It’s a strong start to the second half of the record.

“Cry Cry Cry” is another album highlight. It’s uncharacteristically sensual for the notoriously “mum rock” band. The album closer and titular track “Everyday Life” is also memorable but far more distinctively Coldplay. It follows their typical structure of stripped back verses followed by a buildup and a hand-up sing-along chorus. It’s not quite on par with “Fix You”, but it’s a banger.

Everyday Life may possibly be Coldplay’s best album in a decade. It’s interesting and experimental but still encapsulates that accessibly and comforting rock sound that makes Coldplay one of the most successful bands in the world.

Coldplay has announced that they have a new double album on the way and it is coming sooner than you think.

Over the past couple of weeks, mysterious posters have popped up in countries around the world. The posters were lost spotted in Rio and got fans wondering if new Coldplay music was on the way. A black-and-white video followed on Instagram featuring the date November 22, 2019.

Now, the band has confirmed that the mysterious posters mean a double album coming this fall. They announced the news in old-fashioned postcards that they sent to fans. It will be their first record since 2015’s A Head Full of Dreams.

“For the last 100 years or thereabouts we have been working on a thing called Everyday Life,” the band wrote. They also shared that the two halves will be called “Sunrise” and “Sunset.”

A source told Daily Star: “The first album is the more experimental side of Coldplay, they probably won’t tour until 2020 when the next one arrives.”

All will be explained on November 22, when the double album drops.

After wrapping up their world tour in 2017, Coldplay has been out of the spotlight for the better part of the past two years. That might change soon, however.

According to the latest report from The Daily Star, the British pop-rockers are set to release a new album in 2019. The magazine cites a source close to the band that claims Coldplay will present their new record by the end of November. The said release will be “arty” and should show a more “experimental” side of the band.

But this isn’t everything the group has in store for us. They will also follow this up with a “mainstream” album in 2020, which will then be followed up with a tour. Of course, so far, this news is only rumors and should be taken lightly until an official confirmation from the band.

It isn’t unusual for Coldplay to release back-to-back albums in a short period of time, featuring different music styles. The band released their sixth studio album Ghost Stories in 2014, which marked their return to more stripped songs, which relied heavily on electronica.

They followed that with A Head Full of Dreams, which was released the next year and featured a more diverse music style and uplifting themes. This record also proved to be the band’s last new music to date.
