Ellefson and Poland had not collaborated commercially since the mid-’80s when Poland left Megadeth. That lineup — Ellefson, Poland, Mustaine, and Samuelson — is responsible for Megadeth’s sophomore album Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? which many fans consider to be the best thrash metal ever recorded.
This joint performance came about after Poland lent his virtuoso guitar skills to Ellefson’s debut solo album Sleeping Giants, which came out earlier this year. According to Blabbermouth, Ellefson said that “when we were working on putting together the record, Thom [Hazaert] had brought up the idea to Chris of him playing on a track, and somehow it all worked out.”
“Honestly, the whole thing was a blur,” recounted Poland. “Thom had told me they were working on what would become the ‘Sleeping Giants’ record, and I asked him if I could play on it. It was great to reconnect with David, musically, and the song has such a great energy.”
The question now on every metalhead’s heart is if there’s any chance we might live to see Chris Poland rejoin Megadeth. And while it seems very unlikely, a fan can dream, right?
