Fans of the Buzzcocks are campaigning to get hit track “Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t)” to number one this Friday.

After Pete Shelley’s untimely death last week, fans are hoping to pay tribute to the late musician by getting the band’s iconic single to number one for the first time. Now, the Buzzcocks have backed the campaign.

The Change.org petition reads: “40 years on from the incredible track being released, the band deserves its first number one, plus it would be a brilliant tribute to Pete Shelley. The charts run from Friday to Friday, so get downloading the iconic song below and help us salute Pete!”

Buzzcocks have since stumbled across the campaign and have decided to endorse it as a tribute to their late bandmate. They shared on Facebook: “While we are not the ones who started this campaign, have at it if you like.”

The campaign has already been backed by over 2,000 people and the number is growing. Fans are hoping that with enough of a push, the campaign will be successful in getting the iconic punk song to number one on Friday 14.

One fan summarized everyone’s thoughts exactly: “One of the most original “punk” bands to come out of the 1970’s UK punk scene along with The Jam and Warsaw. The Buzzcocks though their name was decidedly punk rock…they were instant fans and played with all the English punk rock bands of the time, were the different lot of UK punk rock way before the alternative music genre would come to exist. RIP Pete Shelley.”

Pete Shelley, the singer, and co-founder of cult British punk-rock band Buzzcocks, died on Thursday at the age of 63. According to BBC, who was among the first to report the news, the cause of Shelley’s death is a suspected heart attack.

“It’s with great sadness that we confirm the death of Pete Shelley, one of the UK’s most influential and prolific songwriters and co-founder of the seminal original punk band Buzzcocks,” said the Buzzcocks’ spokesperson in a statement. “Pete’s music has inspired generations of musicians over a career that spanned five decades and with his band and as a solo artist, he was held in the highest regard by the music industry and by his fans around the world.”

Pete Shelley formed the Buzzcocks with Howard Devoto in 1976, but Devoto ended up leaving before the band released their first studio album. Originally just a guitarist, Shelley took on the role of a vocalist as well while emerging as the band’s main creative force.

Buzzcocks released nine albums with Pete Shelley and went on to be regarded as one of the most influential bands in British music despite their lack of commercial success. They also developed devoted fanbases and a cult following in the U.K. and the United States.

Besides his work with Buzzcocks, Shelley was also productive as a solo artist, releasing a total of six studio albums.
