]]>During his recent appearance on the Tonight Show, Springsteen was asked by the host Jimmy Fallon to settle some debates about himself. One of them was about the song “Thunder Road” and how no one is exactly sure about its lyrics. Some believe that Springsteen sings “the screen door slams, Mary’s dress sways,” while others think he sings “the screen door slams, Mary’s dress waves.”
Springsteen was happy to clear the confusion by bringing the original release of the album to the show.
“I was insane about every single detail that had anything to do with music, my album, my album cover, my lyrics,” he told Fallon. “I went over everything with a fine-tooth comb so everything would be perfect and completely accurate. The lyrics to ‘Thunder Road’ are in this album. The correct lyrics.”
Springsteen looked into the lyrics printed on the album, and it turned out the correct line was “the screen door slams, Mary’s dress waves.” The only issue was that the rocker himself has been singing “the screen door slams, Mary’s dress sways” on his live shows.
“This is wrong,” Springsteen added jokingly while pointing to the record.
