“Selassie is the Chapel,” a rare track by reggae legend Bob Marley, recently found its way to streaming services. The song, recorded in 1968 with the backing of The Wailers for JAD Records, will also get a limited edition seven-inch vinyl re-release.

The lyrics for the song were penned by Marley’s friend and Rastafari elder Mortimer Planno. It is considered the first Rastafarian song that Marley ever recorded. JAD Records released the track as a single, but only several hundred vinyl copies were pressed, and the track was largely forgotten.

“Selassie is the Chapel” was unearthed in 1997 as part of the compilation series Complete Bob Marley & the Wailers 1967 to 1972 and was reissued on vinyl in 2002.

According to a press release made by JAD Records, a total of 2,000 copies of “Selassie is the Chapel” 7-inch vinyl edition will be made available to the fans.

“Selassie is the Chapel is a rare, spiritual and emotive recording, one that was incredibly dear to Marley and delivers a personal statement from him about his beliefs,” said JAD Records in a press release. “This beautiful song is being presented as a message of peace to the world, at a time of global turbulence.”

Bunny Wailer (Neville O’Riley Livingston OM), reggae icon and co-founder of The Wailers, has died at the age of 73. Wailer’s death has been confirmed by Jamaica’s Minister of Culture Olivia Grunge at the request of his family on Tuesday.

Reportedly, Wailer’s health has been in decline following multiple strokes he suffered in recent years.

Wailer founded The Wailers in 1963 with Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, who was his childhood friend. He spent 11 years with the group and took part in the recording of six studio albums, including 1973’s Catch a Fire, which is widely viewed as one of the best reggae albums of all times.

As The Wailers gained more prominence on the international music scene and became centered on Marley, Wailer started questioning his role in the group. He officially exited in 1974, refusing to go on a U.S. tour, and opted to focus on his solo career.

Bunny Wailer released his debut solo album Blackheart Man in 1976. He did all the writing, singing, and producing on the record while also recruiting some of the notable reggae artists and his former bandmates, including Marley to give their contribution.

Blackheart Man was a big success and is now considered to be among the essential reggae records. It paved the way for Wailer’s successful and prolific career, which resulted in almost 40 albums, including studio releases, live concerts, and compilations.

Wailer won numerous awards and accolades for his work in music, including three Grammy Awards. He was also the recipient of the Order of Merit, the fourth-highest honor in Jamaica.

The official YouTube channel of Bob Marley recently delivered a special surprise for fans of the reggae legend by sharing the musician’s iconic Live at Rainbow concert from 1977.

The concert, which was the last of four performed at London’s Rainbow Theater in June 1997, saw Marley and his backing band The Wailers deliver a 13-song setlist. It included classics like “I Shot the Sheriff” and “No Woman No Cry,” alongside 18-minutes long encore medley consisting of “Jamming,” “Get Up, Stand Up,” and “Exodus.”

Some of the footage from the gig was already available online before, but this is the first time fans can check it out in full and in HD quality.

While watching the concert, fans will also be able to contribute donations that will benefit the music community affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Spotify will match the donations with a contribution to MusiCares up to a total of $10 million through the Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief.

Bob Marley was originally scheduled to perform six shows at Rainbow Theater in early June as the final stop on the supporting tour for his seminal record Exodus. However, only four took place, last one on June 4th, while the two remaining were canceled due to Marley’s toe injury.
