Bob Dylan fans have been scouring their local record stores this past week to get their hands on a collection of studio outtakes from 1973 recently released by the legendary musician. Didn’t know anything about it? Don’t worry—you are not the only one.

As it turns out, Dylan secretly released the collection, titled 50th Anniversary Collection 1973, by sending a limited number of copies to record stores across Europe. It features 28 tracks taken from recording sessions for the soundtrack of 1973’s western flick Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid.

The word about the release quickly spread among Dylan enthusiasts, who embarked on a quest to find a copy of the collection. Those who are unwilling to do the hard work can pick one on the secondary market, where they are priced out as much as $500.

The most likely reason why Bob Dylan released the 50th Anniversary Collection 1973 the way he did is a European copyright law that sends all recordings into the public domain if they are unreleased 50 years after being made.

Dylan previously did the same for the outtakes from his first three “electric albums,” Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde. They were released as a box set and also distributed to record stores in Europe in a limited capacity to fulfill the requirement.

Before settling on his now iconic name, Bob Dylan considered several other monikers. The legendary musician, whose real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman, almost called himself “Little Willie”. This was revealed in a series of his love letters that have been recently sold at an auction.

The 42 letters, which fetched $670,000, were written by 16-year-old Dylan to his high school sweetheart Barbara Hewitt. In the letters, he writes Hewitt about his hopes and dreams, including his ambition to sell millions of records and become a famous musician. Check and check.

One letter, in which Dylan invites Hewitt to a Buddy Holly concert, reveals that he intended to build his career under an unusual stage name. He signs the letter as “Little Willie, the lead singer of the Night Gales.”

Of course, Robert Allen Zimmerman changed his mind later on. He performed under various monikers early in his career, including Elston Gunn, before settling on Bob Dylan. Under this name, he became one of the most prominent figures in the history of music.

Dylan released 39 studio albums to date while selling more than 125 million records. He also won numerous awards, including the Nobel Prize in Literature “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”

If you have some spare cash and want to own a piece of music history, now is your chance. Reputable memorabilia dealer, Moments in Time, recently announced it’s putting several of Bob Dylan’s handwritten lyrics on sale, including the manuscript for one of his biggest hits, “The Times They Are a-Changin’.”

The iconic song lyrics were written on a single sheet of paper and illustrate the song in the making. Dylan was visibly tinkering with the track, crossing some verses and lyrics while also adding interesting notes like “Tommy Blake Sweetie Pie,” and “42nd Street Photo Booth.”

Released in 1965 as a single, “The Times They Are a-Changin'” ended up becoming one of the most influential protest songs of all time. It is also considered one of the greatest tracks in music history, with Rolling Stone placing it on No.59 on their “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list.

As expected, the document of this significance isn’t cheap and comes with a price tag of $2.2 million. If the asking price ends up being met, it would be the most expensive song lyrics document of all time. Dylan also holds the current record, with the handwritten lyrics for “Like a Rolling Stone” being sold for $2 million.

According to Moments in Time owner Gary Zimet, the lyrics are being offered on sale by a private collector. They have been previously owned by Dylan’s current manager Jeff Rosen.

“It’s not an auction. It’s a private sale. First come, first served,” Zimet told Reuters.

Moments in Time is also offering two more Bob Dylan’s handwritten lyrics. The “Subterranean Homesick Blues” lyrics are priced at $1.2 million while “Lay Lady Lay” comes with a price of $650,000.

Bob Dylan finally has a new song out. The iconic American singer/songwriter is back with “Murder Most Foul,” an epic 17-minute long track that talks about the murder of US President John F. Kennedy. This is the first original song Dylan released since 2012’s album Tempest.

“Murder Most Foul” features Dylan narrating the story of Kennedy’s assassination almost like a spoken-word while being accompanied by piano and violin. The track shifts to other subjects as it progresses and includes numerous cultural references of the 60s and 70s, including Beatlemania, Rolling Stones, and Woodstock.  Hear it below.

“Greetings to my fans and followers with gratitude for all your support and loyalty across the years,” said Dylan about the track. “This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find interesting. Stay safe, stay observant, and may God be with you.”

After Tempest, Bob Dylan went on to release three studio albums of covers on which he sings the American classics. The most recent one, Triplicate, was released back in 2017.

In 2019, Dylan also presented Travelin’ Thru, the15th entry in his Bootleg Series. The release features alternate takes from his albums John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline, as well as the songs he recorded with Johnny Cash and Earl Scruggs in 1969 and 1970.

Bob Dylan and Neil Young recently did a co-headlining show in Kilkenny, Ireland and treated the audience with a special duet performance of popular Christian hymn “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” This marked the first time in 25 years that the duo was on stage together. The last time Dylan and Young shared the stage was in 1994 at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.

Dylan and Young did a co-headlining show at London’s Hyde Park last week but did not perform together.

Young posted a snippet of their joint performance on his Instagram profile, while several fan-made clips surfaced since then. Check them below.

Bob Dylan extensively played “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” early in his career, and recorded a studio version with the Band during the Basement Tapes sessions in 1967. Dylan hasn’t played the song since his Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1976.

Neil Young, on the other hand, first did the song in 1975 at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco with Dylan. Since then, Young performed the song four times with Willie Nelson. The last time Young and Nelson did the song was in September 2018 during a show in Saratoga Springs.

The next installment of Dylan’s Bootleg Series will likely feature the famous Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash Nashville sessions.

The Nashville sessions were the first and only time the longtime friends ever played together in public. While they spent a whole day recording at Columbia Studio A, only “Girl From The North Country” made the cut for Nashville Skyline. But now, fans might get to hear more of what went down during those sessions.

“We’re thinking about possibly doing Bob’s work in Nashville from John Wesley Harding through the Johnny Cash sessions as the next Bootleg Series,” a source told Rolling Stone. “The outtakes from that period have never been heard.”

The two recorded versions of “Mystery Train,” as well as “You Are My Sunshine,” “Ring of Fire,” “Big River,” and several other songs, are among those we might get to finally hear all these years later.

Bob Dylan is treating his fans with some rare covers during the last couple of live shows across the United States.

After playing Henry Mancini’s “Moon River” for the first time since 1990 in Savannah, Dylan decided to surprise the fans at his show in Augusta by covering James Brown’s hit “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” This was the first time that Dylan played one of Brown’s songs at his concerts.

It was a fitting cover since Brown moved to Augusta from Barnwell at a young age and started his music career in the city.

Bob Dylan is famous for banning cellphones at his concerts, so we assumed that we missed out on this special event. Luckily, one fan managed to capture most of the song on a video with a surprising clean audio.

Hear Dylan playing “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” below.

James Brown co-wrote “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” with Betty Jean Newsome and recorded the song in 1966. It became a hit on the charts, peaking at number eight on US Billboard Hot 100 and topping the US R&B Singles charts. The song became one of Brown’s most popular songs and ended up being selected as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
