The BBC Sound longlist has been revealed and next year, it looks like solo artists will be the ones taken the crown.

Every year, the BBC compile a list of acts which have been tipped for big success in the new year. The list tends to be fairly reliable with acts such as Sam Smith and Years & Years being at the top of the list in previous years.

The head of BBC Music and BBC Music Introducing, James Stirling said of the longlist: “For 17 years the BBC Music Sound Of list has been celebrating exciting up-and-coming talent and this year we are proud to recognize the work of such an eclectic mix of musicians. There’s a wealth of talent coming through and I look forward to seeing the artists build their reputations in 2019”.

For 2019, the BBC are rooting for artists such as Grace Carter and Mahalia to win us over. Interestingly, the list seems to lean heavily towards solo artists.

Only time will tell how accurate the list this year will be.

The complete longlist is as follows:

Dermot Kennedy
Ella Mai
Flohio
Grace Carter
King Princess
Mahalia
Octavian
Rosalía
Sea Girls
Slowthai

A new fund created to provide opportunities for up-and-coming artists has managed to raise more than £13 million for the British music industry.

The Momentum Music Fund aims to empower up-and-coming artists from Britain and provides artists with grants of between £5,000 and £15,000 to help them cultivate and develop their talent.

The fund also aims to empower artists from backgrounds which are under-represented, and nearly half of the artists who benefit from this project are either black or Asian – two minority groups in Britain who are still under-represented in the media.

The money can be used for anything the emerging artist may need, such as to cover the costs of touring, equipment, recording and generating publicity.
