Backstreet Boys and NSYNC were two of the biggest boy bands of the early 2000s and they were often seen as rivals. Members of the first band recently discussed the friendly competition between them and revealed that one of NSYNC’s hits was first offered to them.

Backstreet Boys recently set down with Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and accepted calls from fans during their appearance on the show. Kevin Richardson reflected on their rivalry with NSYNC after one caller brought up the fact that both bands were formed by the same producer.

“Basically the same producer — Max Martin — that did a lot of their songs did our songs, and they offered us…I’m pretty sure it was ‘Tearin Up My Heart’ and we turned it down. But look, the thing with us and NSYNC, we were brothers; we were just on different teams,” explained Richardson.

The fact they were releasing music with a similar vibe at the same time didn’t stop either band from thriving. Both bands released two albums that reached no. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 before going their separate ways, but Backstreet Boys eventually reunited and topped the charts again with their last album DNA.

Backstreet Boys are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album Millennium this year, and have now decided to treat their fans with a special gift to mark the occasion.

The band recently shared a “reimagined” version of the album’s biggest hit “I Want it That Way,” which swapped the original’s pop-y production for acoustic interpretation.

“Believe us when we say, no one else comes close to having as amazing fans as we do! It’s gotta be you guys, We would never be able to say enough ‘thank yous’ but wanted to share a little something to show how grateful we are,” – said the band in a statement.

Hear the new version of “I Want It That Way” below.

Backstreet Boys released Millennium on May 18, 1999, with “I Want It That Way” serving as the album’s first single. The record received positive reviews while topping the US Billboard 200 charts. It went on to become one of the best-selling albums in music with more than 30 million copies being sold. Besides “I Want It That Way”, other hits from Millennium include “Larger than Life” and “Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely.”

Backstreet Boys released their new album DNA back in January and are now gearing for a worldwide tour to promote the record. The North America leg of the tour kicks off on July 12 in Washington and wraps up on September 15 in Newark.

2019 will bring us dozens of new albums we can’t wait to listen to, and some of them will be released by artists we haven’t heard from in years. Check out new songs from five beloved musicians and bands who are supposed to drop new records in the next few months.

Avril Lavigne

Lavigne has been focusing on her health after being diagnosed with Lyme disease, but she’ll be back and stronger than ever with her new album Head Above Water.

Backstreet Boys

Favorite boy band of our teen years is coming back after a six-year long break, and they’ll embark on a world tour this May to promote their new album DNA.

Dido

Dido gave us some of the most emotional ballads of early 2000s, and she’s going back to her roots with new album Still on My Mind.

Hozier

It’s been over five years since Hozier won us over with hit song “Take Me to Church”. We had a feeling he pretty much disappeared after that, but his sophomore album Wasteland, Baby! is finally coming out this year.

Vampire Weekend

Fans of Vampire Weekend spent six years waiting for their next album to drop, but the wait will finally be over in 2019.

Backstreet Boys are making a big comeback with their new studio album DNA and it’s already one of their biggest hits to date. The legendary boy band climbed to the top of Billboard 200 chart thanks to their latest record, after almost two decades without a no. 1 album.

DNA was released on January 23, but Backstreet Boys knew they have another hit on their hands long before it hit the shelves. Lead single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” proved to be one of their biggest success stories and the band even received their first Grammy nod since 2002 thanks to this catchy track.

DNA is the first album they released in six years, and each member poured their heart and soul into the final product. Kevin Richardson explained this record perfectly reflects who they are, and that’s why they decided to go with this symbolic title.

“We were able to bring all of our influences and styles into one coherent piece of work. These songs are a great representation of who we are as individuals and who we are as a group. It’s our DNA. We’re really proud of that,” said Richardson.
