“Basically the same producer — Max Martin — that did a lot of their songs did our songs, and they offered us…I’m pretty sure it was ‘Tearin Up My Heart’ and we turned it down. But look, the thing with us and NSYNC, we were brothers; we were just on different teams,” explained Richardson.
The fact they were releasing music with a similar vibe at the same time didn’t stop either band from thriving. Both bands released two albums that reached no. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 before going their separate ways, but Backstreet Boys eventually reunited and topped the charts again with their last album DNA.

Backstreet Boys released Millennium on May 18, 1999, with “I Want It That Way” serving as the album’s first single. The record received positive reviews while topping the US Billboard 200 charts. It went on to become one of the best-selling albums in music with more than 30 million copies being sold. Besides “I Want It That Way”, other hits from Millennium include “Larger than Life” and “Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely.”
Backstreet Boys released their new album DNA back in January and are now gearing for a worldwide tour to promote the record. The North America leg of the tour kicks off on July 12 in Washington and wraps up on September 15 in Newark.

Lead single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” proved to be one of their biggest success stories and the band even received their first Grammy nod since 2002 thanks to this catchy track.
DNA is the first album they released in six years, and each member poured their heart and soul into the final product. Kevin Richardson explained this record perfectly reflects who they are, and that’s why they decided to go with this symbolic title.
“We were able to bring all of our influences and styles into one coherent piece of work. These songs are a great representation of who we are as individuals and who we are as a group. It’s our DNA. We’re really proud of that,” said Richardson.
