]]>One of our favorite parts is its amazing soundtrack, and director Jonathan Levine recently revealed how he put it together.
Music always played a huge role in his filmmaking process, and he took the same approach with this love story about a potential presidential candidate and her newly appointed speechwriter, played by Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen.
Levine shared his process in an interview with Slash Film, and explained he put together a playlist of songs he wanted to use, that served as a great source of inspiration.
“I was really going for this Cameron Crowe thing. Music is how you see the world. Music is the way you mark relationships. Music is what you remember about falling in love or breaking up. Music is the thing you share with someone when you want to get closer to them,” revealed Levine.
One of the most epic moments of the whole movie was surprise cameo by Boyz II Men. They gave the movie a ’90s flavor, and the love story between main characters probably wouldn’t even happen if it wasn’t for their music.
“They were the first call we made, and we we’re so excited they said yes, because from a character perspective, there’s so much of thinking about the young idealist and whether the young version of you would be happy with where you are today,” said Levine.

]]>According to the organization’s official statement following this announcement, Franklin was recognized “for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades.”
She’s not the first musician to receive this honor – the list of previous recipients includes Rodgers and Hammerstein, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Bob Dylan, and Hank Williams. There’s still something historic about Franklin’s win – she’s the first female artist to ever be honored with this special award.
Aretha Franklin was never a stranger to breaking new grounds, and her career was filled with many firsts. Back in 1987, she became the first solo female performer to make it Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
She was also inducted to the UK Music Hall of Fame and to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and won dozens of prestigious awards over the course of her five-decade-long career.

]]>It’s not out of the ordinary for old-school icons to be critical of today’s pop stars. Aretha Franklin, however, had nothing but nice things to say about the industry’s current pop idols. Here’s what the late soul legend had to say about Taylor Swift, Adele and the queen herself.
“I love whoever is dressing her. Love her clothes. I went to her website and saw she wore Oscar de la Renta, and I know she gets some things from Oscar. I tried to order that gown. It never fit.”
“I saw one of Adele’s promo pieces, and kids were on a bus singing ‘We could’ve had it all.’ They were just screaming it. But I was listening to the melody, I said ‘That’s a good melody, I like that melody.’ She’s a very, very fine, solid writer. I like her writing a lot. She has a lot to say. A lot of content. And, she’s a very good singer. She reminds me how Carole King used to be with Tapestry. Her things are so original.”
“We have a lot of respect for each other,” Franklin said. “I love the beat of ‘Bootylicious.’ And ‘I’m a Survivor” (Franklin covered Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” at the end of her career.) “Beyonce is a very hard working woman. Astrologically, for whatever it’s worth she’s a Virgo – like Michael Jackson, a hard worker. She’s very pleasant. She’s complementary to other artists. And I think she just has a very positive message. I mean, I went to see her perform and I came out of there feeling uplifted. And Beyonce is very outspoken on feminist issues. So I think that’s good. That could be brought to the forefront more.”

The love she has for her family is above reproach and was evident in the warm smiles she was able to share with her nephew during his very brief visit two weeks ago.
“She is seriously ill and surrounded by family members who appreciate the outpouring of love and support they have received.”
Although reports have said she is preparing to say her goodbyes, her nephew Tim Franklin remains optimistic.
“She’s alert, laughing, teasing, able to recognize people. Family is there with her. She’s home. I saw her a week ago Friday and we talked for about 45 minutes to an hour,” he said. “My brother was there on Saturday and she was alert, talking, laughing, joking.”
He added: “We believe she’ll pull through it, she believes she’ll pull through it, and that’s the important thing.”
Her fans across the world are hopeful that she will pull through it too.
