]]>According to the band’s official statement, their latest album borrows its name from the term “pink elephant”, which refers to the paradoxical effect where the effort to suppress a thought leads to it being impossible to avoid.
“When experienced in its entirety, Pink Elephant invites the listener on a sonic odyssey – a quest for life – that exists within the perception of the individual, a meditation on both darkness and light, the beauty within. The layers of this condensed epic unfold to reveal new dimensions with each successive listen,” reads Arcade Fire’s press release.
They described the genre of their new record as “cinematic mystical punk” and confirmed it will feature 10 brand-new tracks. “Year of the Snake” was released as the lead single, while the tracklist also includes such titles as “Open Your Heart or Die Trying”, “Beyond Salvation”, and “Alien Nation”.
Pink Elephant will be released on May 9.

]]>According to Butler, the album came to be during the coronavirus pandemic. He recorded and produced the album in his basement studio in Brooklyn.
“My first record, Policy, was a book of short stories,” said Butler in a press release. “Generations is more of a novel—despairing, funny, a little bit epic…. A big chunk of this record is asking: What’s my place in American history? What’s my place in America’s present?”
Alongside the announcement, Butler presented “Surrender,” which serves as the first single from Generations.
Will Butler was previously busy working on the new Arcade Fire album, the follow up to 2017’s Everything Now. However, the coronavirus pandemic halted the recording process as the band members live in three different countries.
“It takes more logistics to get together,” Butler admitted in a recent interview. “It always took a certain amount of logistics, but right now, it’s insurmountable.”

He also added that the group has been writing the material for the album “for the last couple of years.”
“We had been exploring a lot of lyrical and musical themes that feel almost eerily related to what is happening now (we actually have a song called ‘Age of Anxiety’ written a year ago for Christ’s sake – ha ha),” Butler wrote in the notes. “Needless to say, the writing has intensified, and the work is flowing out… It is challenging as ever, and with just as much purpose.”
Butler also hinted that the band might perform some of the material via some online performance.
