According to Butler, the album came to be during the coronavirus pandemic.  He recorded and produced the album in his basement studio in Brooklyn.

“My first record, Policy, was a book of short stories,” said Butler in a press release. “Generations is more of a novel—despairing, funny, a little bit epic…. A big chunk of this record is asking: What’s my place in American history? What’s my place in America’s present?”

Alongside the announcement, Butler presented “Surrender,” which serves as the first single from Generations.

Will Butler was previously busy working on the new Arcade Fire album, the follow up to 2017’s Everything Now. However, the coronavirus pandemic halted the recording process as the band members live in three different countries.

“It takes more logistics to get together,” Butler admitted in a recent interview. “It always took a certain amount of logistics, but right now, it’s insurmountable.”
