Ronnie Dunn hasn’t been taking it easy since Brooks & Dunn called it quits back in 2010, and now he has his fourth solo album coming out. Titled Re-Dunn: Twenty-Four Hit Songs, it will feature cover versions of Dunn’s favorite songs.

“It’s a passion project,” Dunn explained in an interview with Billboard. “We laugh and call it ‘Dunn For Fun.’ There’s really not much rhyme or reason other than these are songs that I have on playlists and have been around forever.”

The album was originally meant to include about 12 rock covers, but the musicians were having so much recording them, that they decided to keep on recordin’.

“I said, ‘That was so much fun. Let’s do a country thing,’” Dunn recalled. “So we ended up doing 12 or 13 country songs, different covers. Some of them are old school but others are fairly contemporary like, ‘That’s How I Got to Memphis’ and ‘Amarillo By Morning.’ These are songs I played in clubs and the soundtrack of what I’ve listened to all my life.”

Dunn expanded on his choice to cover “Amarillo by Morning” and release it as his first single: “At the time, that song was a regional hit in west Texas where I was going to school by an artist named Terry Stafford. This is way before Strait cut it. Later in the ‘80s when George did his thing, I’m going, ‘Wow! We used to do that song in cover bands years ago.’”

You can listen to “Amarillo by Morning” by Dunn on Spotify. In the meanwhile, here he is performing it live with George Strait back in 2014:
