Newcomer H.E.R. clinched the award for her project H.E.R. It was not a full album but rather a smaller collection of songs. In the musical world, such a project is called an EP. The 21-year-old was nominated alongside Toni Braxton, Leon Bridges, Lalah Hathaway and PJ Morton.
Drake’s “God’s Plan was unsurprisingly the winner after its commercial success last year. Other songs in the category included “King’s Dead” by Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Future, and James Blake. “Lucky” by Eminem and “Sicko mode” made up the other nominated songs.
Kacey Musgraves won the award for her album Golden Hour, edging out Kelsea Ballerini, Brothers Osborne, Ashley McBryde and Chris Stapleton. The artists had been nominated for their albums, Unapologetically, Port Saint Joe, Girl Going Nowhere and From a Room: Volume 2 in respective order.
Donald Glover, aka. Childish Gambino clinched the award with “This is America”, the first time a rap song won the prestigious award. He beat Drake’s “God’ plan”, Lady Gaga’s “Shallow”, Lamar’s “All the Stars”.
In a category that also included Christina Aguilera and the Backstreet Boys, Lady Gaga emerged the winner for her song “Shallow” alongside Bradley Cooper. She beat six other pop duos to clinch the award, including Maroon 5 and Cardi B’s “Girls Like You.”
Another win for Lady Gaga but this time for Joanne (Where do you think you’re Goin?). She beat Beck (Colors), Camila Cabello (Havana), Ariana Grande (God is a Woman) and Post Malone (Better).
