We can always count on Lady Gaga to push boundaries and defy expectations with each new album she shares with the world, and Mayhem is no different. Her latest album finally hit the shelves this Friday, and it marks the glorious return to her dance-pop roots that also sees her experimenting with many other genres.

Lady Gaga described Mayhem as a “chaotic blur of genres”, and she truly lived up to these words. Her latest album is mostly rooted in the dance-pop music that put her on the map, but it also includes elements of synth-pop, disco, industrial pop, rock, and grunge.

What makes Mayhem so interesting is Gaga’s commitment to celebrating the truest version of herself while also paying homage to some of the legends who shaped her journey as a musician.

Many of the songs, including the three opening tracks “Disease”, “Abracadabra”, and “Garden of Eden”, sound straight out of Gaga’s early albums, such as The Fame and Born This Way. Mayhem also features several songs inspired by her role models, such as Michael Jackson on “Shadow of a Man”, David Bowie on “Vanish Into You”, and Prince on “Killah”.

Mayhem is a glorious return to Gaga’s dance-pop roots, which also sees her stepping into new territories and exploring a diversity of genres and styles. This is both its biggest strength and weakness because the album’s tone is pretty uneven, and certain songs – such as a chart-topping Bruno Mars collaboration “Die with a Smile”, which was initially released as a standalone single – feel slightly out of place.

We’ve seen many of our favorite pop stars try to reinvent themselves and enter new eras, and Camila Cabello felt it was time for her bad girl revamp. She entered the next stage of her career with her fourth solo album C,XOXO, but is her party girl rebrand worth the hype?

Cabello teased C,XOXO as an album that sees her stepping out of her comfort zone and embracing her wild side. Her new era came with a total makeover, including bleached blonde hair, but many fans felt this change seemed too forced for the former Fifth Harmony singer even before she even shared any new music.

Things only got worse when the lead single “I Luv It” drew comparisons to Charli XCX’s song “I Got It”, while its follow-up, the Lil Nas X collaboration “He Knows” failed to make any impact on the charts despite featuring two major stars.

Cabello finally got the chance to prove the naysayers wrong on June 28, when she shared C,XOXO in full, but ended up serving more of the same. It gives us some solid dance-pop moments, but most songs are instantly forgettable unless you lean into the cringe.

Some of the features on C,XOXO elevated this album, while others don’t do it any favors. “Hot Uptown” ft. Drake is pretty solid, but their second collaboration “Uuugly” makes it feel like Cabello is a guest on her own album, and PinkPantheress’ “Pink XOXO” does the same.

After over a decade in the industry, Cabello’s career is certainly ripe for reinvention, but C,XOXO isn’t the big shift she was aiming for. Its sound is not authentic enough to hook us in, and most of the songs it has in store are too disposable to make any real impact in the long run.

Normani has come a long way since Fifth Harmony went on a hiatus in 2018, but she still hasn’t given us a studio album for years to come. Her long-awaited debut Dopamine finally hit the shelves this Friday, but does it live up to its name and was it worth the wait?

It was clear that Normani was destined for R&B greatness when she dropped her breakout hit “Motivation” in 2019. It felt like a perfect launchpad for her debut album, but the record her fans were expecting never came and her fans spent the next five years waiting for what she’s promised.

Dopamine is finally here, with no “Motivation” in sight, after Normani decided to scrap it in pursuit of a new sound. It kicks off with a groovy, rap-influenced “Bad Boy” and gives us 13 tracks that allow Normani to reintroduce herself and show us what she’s been working on for such a long time.

Dopamine kicks off rather slow, and the songs from the first half of the album pretty much blend together and they’re not catchy enough to be memorable. Normani shows a lot of promise with “All Yours” and “Take My Time”, true love letters to the classic R&B sound that inspired this album.

She finally picks up the pace with “Insomnia” and “Canty Paint” and things get much better from there. The second half also gives us several A-list collaborations, including “1:59” ft. Gunna, “Tantrums” ft. James Blake, and “Wild Side” ft. Cardi B, which dates all the way back to 2021 and serves as a reminder of what Normani was capable of long before Dopamine.

She previously described her debut album as a representation of her evolution and “everything [she had] gone through to get to this moment”, but Dopamine feels too impersonal to live up to these words. Despite being Normani’s first foray into solo music, it feels more like a homage to her idols than a personal statement, but it’s still a pretty good R&B record that makes us excited to see her growth.

Billie Eilish has been unapologetically herself since the start of her young career, and her authenticity shines through on her third studio album. Hit Me Hard and Soft lives up to its name, as it sees her getting vulnerable and honest while maturing as an artist and experimenting with new sounds.

When Eilish first announced this album, she described it as a record that “hits you hard and soft both lyrically and sonically while bending genres and defying trends along the way.” This description couldn’t be more fitting, and she also stayed true to her promise that this album would immerse listeners into a full spectrum of emotions.

Hit Me Hard and Soft grabs you from the very first song and never lets go. “Skinny” is the record’s emotional anchor, but the album really picks up with its lead single “Lunch,” which sees Eilish getting very honest about her attraction to girls.

“Lunch” has the potential to become the “Bad Guy” of Hit Me Hard and Soft, and it sees Eilish staying true to herself while not shying away from getting weird and experimental. She finds a perfect balance between soft melodies and catchier electronic sounds throughout this album, sometimes even on the same songs.

This record goes from soft to hard somewhere in the middle, with “L’Amour De Ma Vie,” which feels like two songs wrapped into one, both amazing in their own right. She also often explores the same themes and repeats the same phrases, with the final track “Blue” being the perfect example since it reprises some of the lyrics recurring throughout the album.

At just 10 tracks, Hit Me Hard and Soft could have easily felt too short, but it never does. Not a single song feels out of place, and Eilish’s decision to release them all at once was the right call because they tie so perfectly together, in terms of both the lyrics and the sound.

Hit Me Hard and Soft cements Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s reputation as one of the most interesting musical duos working today. It’s a raw and honest record that shows Eilish isn’t afraid of taking risks as she matures as an artist, and this is shaping up to be her biggest strength.

Dua Lipa gave us one of the defining pop records of the 2020s with Future Nostalgia, and this album was always going to be a tough act to follow. She set out to capture the essence of freedom on her third studio album Radical Optimism and definitely succeeded, while also failing to break new ground.

When Lipa first announced Radical Optimism, she described it as a record that explores the idea “the idea of going through chaos gracefully and feeling like you can weather any storm.” She stayed true to her word, while also breaking some of the other promises she made while promoting this record.

Lipa also described her third LP as a “psychedelic-pop-infused tribute to UK rave culture”, inspired by psychedelia, trip-hop, and Britpop, mentioning Primal Scream and Massive Attack as her inspiration. These influences are nowhere to be seen, and Radical Optimism feels more like a love letter to Euro-pop that would fit right in at Eurovision, than the Britpop-inspired album she painted it as.

Lipa introduces us to her new sound with the solid opener “End of an Era” and followed it up with two songs we’ve already heard: “Houdini” and “Training Season”. Choosing them as singles proved to be a smart move because they’re two of the strongest tracks on this record.

Lipa also described Radical Optimism as her most personal record yet, but it doesn’t feel like it. Getting too vulnerable was never a part of her brand, and her career never suffered for it before, but the cracks are starting to show on her third studio album, which feels quite bland in comparison to some of the recent albums by her peers.

If you’re looking for carefree, escapist pop that will fire up the summer festivals, Radical Optimism will be your cup of tea. It gives us some pretty solid bangers, including “Illusion” and “Falling Forever”, that could become hits if Lipa sticks to playing the long game.

Despite being a pretty solid dance-pop record, Radical Optimism is also Lipa’s weakest one yet. It definitely doesn’t break any new ground, but you can feel that she had the time of her life making it, and its carefree vibe might help you find your bliss, as well.

We live in the era of Taylor Swift’s absolute domination, and The Tortured Poets Department marks her fourth album in just 18 months. The singer took us on another epic lyrical journey and explored different stages of heartbreak on this vulnerable and vindictive album, which also happens to be one of her most uneven releases in recent years.

Swift has been through a lot since Midnight hit the shelves in 2022—and we’re not just talking about her record-breaking The Eras Tour. The singer’s romantic relationship often served as the main source of inspiration for her music, and Tortured Poets continues this trend, but not in a way you’d think.

This is Swift’s first album of new material since her six-year relationship with Joe Alwyn came to an end, and many expected their breakup would be the main subject of this album. Instead of simply throwing Alwyn under the bus, Swift decided to explore many stages of heartbreak on this record, reserving her vindictive quips for a short-term fling with Matty Healy and giving her some of her edgiest lyrics since Reputation.

Tortured Poets is at its strongest when Swift is ready to bare her emotions and get vulnerable, instead of resorting to pettiness. “So Long, London” is the case in point, and it’s one of her most emotional and raw breakup anthems since her magnum opus “All Too Well”.

Her vulnerability doesn’t shine as strongly on the rest of the album, but Reputation fans will appreciate the vengeful tone and audacious nature of some of the album’s buzziest songs, such as “But Daddy I Love Him”, “The Tortured Poets Department”, and especially “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”. She also found two pretty great collaborators in Post Malone (“Fortnight”) and Florence Welch (“Florida!!!”).

Swift’s storytelling skills remain as strong as ever on The Tortured Poets Department, but this collection of songs doesn’t feel as cohesive as some of her recent albums. Its synth-pop sound feels repetitive at times, making us wonder if Swift’s collaboration with producer Jack Antonoff has run its course – especially when we compare it with Aaron Dessner’s work on the album’s second volume The Anthology.

The Tortured Poets Department is a solid synth-pop record that bridges the gap between Swift’s several eras. It gives us a moment of boldness, audacity, and vulnerability that continue the singer’s legacy as one of the best storytellers of her generation, but it also feels like a pit stop until the next great thing.

Beyoncé never shied away from experimenting with different genres, but her decision to embrace country was a true stroke of genius. Her long-awaited Cowboy Carter is a love letter to country’s Black roots we’ve been waiting for, and it cements Queen B’s legacy as one of the most versatile artists of her generation.

Beyoncé made it clear that Cowboy Carter isn’t a country album, but a “Beyoncé album” when she first announced its title, and she doubled down on this statement from the very first track. “American Requiem” infuses the album with gospel vibes, and sees Queen B addressing claims she doesn’t belong on the country scene.

Her cover of The Beatles’ “Blackbird” continued exploring the overlooked impact of African-American artists on this genre, and it saw her joining forces with several Black female country stars. Despite its brilliance, her version of “Jolene” is the album’s best cover and one of the signature tracks, shedding a new, defiant light on the Dolly Parton classic we all know and love.

Parton also joined Cowboy Carter as one of Beyoncé’s A-list collaborators on the track “Tyrant” – and she wasn’t the only one! She also brought Willie Nelson, Post Malone, Linda Martell, and Shaboozey on board, but duet “II Most Wanted” ft. Miley Cyrus is definitely the album’s most brilliant collaboration.

Beyoncé shines as brightly all on her own, and previously released solo singles “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages” carry us through the first half of the album. “Bodyguard”, “Ya Ya”, and “Riverdance” are also worth listening to on repeat, while “Amen” brings things full circle, in a gospel-inspired fashion of the album’s opener. “American Requiem”.

When Beyoncé first revealed the tracklist of Cowboy Carter, the long list of titles left everyone puzzled, but it turned out all 27 of them were actual songs. Some of them are intros and snippets, and not every single one will have a long-term impact, but they all work in the grand scheme of things, serving as worthy building blocks in Cowboy Carter’s legacy.

Cowboy Carter is a true genre-defying masterpiece that perfectly blends the country sound with pop, R&B, soul, and rock, reminding us there’s nothing Beyoncé can’t do. It’s proof that she’s still capable of reinviting herself after almost three decades, and it breathes a new life into a genre where she once felt out of place.

Ariana Grande has been through a lot this past year, and she reflected on her journey on Eternal Sunshine. Her latest album sees her mending her broken heart and shining as bright as ever after finally managing to find her place in the sun.

It’s impossible to talk about Eternal Sunshine without reflecting on the drama behind it. Grande’s latest LP was written in the wake of her divorce and she described it as “kind of a concept album ’cause it’s all different heightened pieces of the same story, of the same experience.”

Like the film that inspired its title, the 2004 sci-fi rom-com Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Grande’s new album explores the lengths we go to in an attempt to let go after a failed relationship. It’s a vulnerable record that also manages to find moments of joy in all the mess of having your heart broken and letting go.

Grande welcomed us into the world of Eternal Sunshine with the lead single “Yes, And?”, and the fact it’s not even close to being its strongest song says a lot about the album’s quality. She shows signs of pettiness on this track, but this isn’t a running theme, and she manages to dig deeper as the songs go by.

Eternal Sunshine won’t give us any bops in the vein of “7 Rings” and “Thank U, Next”, but that’s not stopping it from being a no-skips record. Even its weakest songs are a part of the bigger picture, and Grande shines her brightest when she’s embracing her R&B roots, on such songs as “Bye” and “The Boy is Mine”, or giving us synth-bop vibes with “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)”.

The album’s final song, “Ordinary Things” is a perfect closer because it sees Grande’s grandmother sharing some wisdom about relationships, “Never go to bed without kissin’ goodnight. That’s the worst thing to do, don’t ever, ever do that. And if you can’t, and if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you’re in the wrong place, get out.”

Grande doesn’t use her full vocal capabilities on Eternal Sunshine, and it’s been a while since she had, but this album isn’t weaker for it. It might not be her best or most radio-friendly record, but it shows signs of maturity, compassion, and grace and it’s a perfect reminder that there’s always sunshine after the rain.

We can count on Olivia Rodrigo to give it her all every time she hits the stage, but she managed to exceed our wildest expectations on Saturday Night Live. Her second SNL performance was one for the books, and she delivered a true tour de force with amazing renditions of her hits “Vampire” and “All-American B—h”.

Rodrigo made her SNL debut in 2021 when she was riding on the coattails of her debut album Soar. The 20-year-old singer repeatedly said that its follow-up Guts was written with a tour in mind, and judging by her SNL performance—epic things will happen once she finally hits the road.

Rodrigo kicked off her performance with the stripped-down version of the chart-topping single “Vampire”. She set behind a piano in a dazzling silver dress for a powerful rendition of this soaring ballad, and let her vocals shine with no background singers or other instruments to support her.

Just when we thought her second performance couldn’t possibly be any better, Rodrigo delivered a masterclass in female rage with the theatrical rendition of “All-American B—h”. From dramatically stabbing a cake and smearing it all over her face to chaotically dancing on a dinner table, she did a great job capturing the edgy energy of this pop-punk anthem and made us fall in love with it all over again.

Nicki Minaj broke onto the scene with her debut album Pink Friday, and its follow-up was a long time coming. Pink Friday 2 finally hit the shelves this week and created a lot of buzz on social media, but how does it compare to the original?

Nicki Minaj kicked off a new era for female rappers when she dropped Pink Friday in 2010 and gave us such smash hits as “Super Bass” and “Your Love”. This album propelled Minaj to worldwide fame and served as the jumping-off point for the rest of her career.

She decided to revisit the world she created with Pink Friday over a decade later, and kicked off her journey with the chart-topping hit “Super Freaky Girl”. It’s definitely one of the album’s strongest suits, but it will take quite a while to get there when you’re listening to the album in full.

With 22 tracks clocking at 70 minutes, Pink Friday 2 really has no business being that long. Minaj kept her Barbz waiting for this sequel long enough, and they’ll appreciate every song and every beat, but casual listeners will wish she wrapped things up earlier, especially since she saved some of the best tracks for the second half, including “Pink Friday Girls”, “Super Freaky Girl”, and “Last Time I Saw You”.

The album’s second biggest problem is Minaj’s heavy reliance on samples, which strip Pink Friday 2 of the originality of its predecessors. From Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” to Billie Eilish’s “When the Party’s Over”, this record contains so many samples that it’s hard to tell where they end and Minaj’s verses begin.

Despite all its flaws, Pink Friday 2 proves that Minaj is still one of the best rappers in the game, and her verses are as sharp as ever. This sequel may not push boundaries like its original, but it’s a worthy successor to Pink Friday, and it will certainly please her hardcore fans.

Mayhem is a glorious return to Gaga’s dance-pop roots, which also sees her stepping into new territories and exploring a diversity of genres and styles.
